Hair Products Every Woman Should Own

When it comes to makeup, it can pay to be a hoarder. After all, it helps to have a variety of products to acheive the exact look you're going for. But hair products are a different story. Not only do most products provide multiple benefits, but the more products you use at once, the more buildup you’ll acquire on your scalp. Buildup clogs pores, increasing the chance for oil, dandruff, and slowed hair growth. Instead, keep your routine simple and light with these five stylist-approved products that are guaranteed to give you plenty of style options while maintaining hair health.

Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner

“Every woman should definitely keep a nourishing shampoo and conditioner in her shower,” says Charles Baker Strahan, the Herbal Essences celebrity stylist. “No matter your hair type or texture, you always want to ensure you’re giving your hair the perfect base you need to create any look and get the most out of your styling products.” For dry, thick hair he recommends a moisturizing shampoo that maintains hydration, such as Herbal Essences Hello Hydration ($3.99 each, herbalessences.com). “For finer hair textures, you can use a shampoo and conditioner that have lighter conditioning, such as Herbal Essences Tea-Lightfully Clean ($3.99 each, herbalessences.com) to give your hair the nourishment it needs without weighing it down.”
Thickening Spray/Mousse

Whether you have super-fine hair or a thicker mane, thickening products create more consistency throughout. “Thickening spray works best for medium to thick hair types—not necessarily to give the illusion of thicker hair, but for hold,” says Judy McGuinness, senior stylist at Mizu New York. “Spray sparingly for lighter hold. For women with finer hair, you need more of a foundation to hold the style longer, which is why mousse works great.” She recommends her favorites, Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray ($28, oribe.com) and Bumble and Bumble Thickening Full Form Mousse ($29, bumbleandbumble.com).
Styling Créme

These crémes are the modern-day gel because they work well on all hair types and provide moisture. “Use with a round brush to help polish the ends,” says Max Gierl, another senior stylist at Mizu. When used with a blowdryer, “these products expand, creating nice volume and density. If air dried into the hair, they’re great for frizz reduction and help to hold in natural waves.” When choosing a formula, do pay attention to hair texture. “For fine, straight hair, I like to use a lightweight créme with a little bit of hold, such as Oribe’s Créme For Style ($38, oribe.com),” says McGuinness. “For thicker hair that’s also straight, opt for more of a calming créme like Living Proof’s No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream ($36, livingproof.com), which can stop frizz and also helps to slim down thick hair. For curly hair, I love Bumble and Bumble’s Curl Conscious Crémes ($29, bumbleandbumble.com) to encourage natural texture.”
Flexible Hairspray

“Every woman definitely needs a medium hold, flexible hairspray in their arsenal,” says McGuinness. “These sprays can be finishers or thermal protectors before using a curling iron.” Drybar Money Maker Flexible Hold Hairspray ($25, sephora.com) can easily be brushed through and also helps to tame frizz.
Texture Spray

“This is one of the newest kinds of products on the market,” says Gierl. He recommends every woman, regardless of her hair type, invest in one. The category includes all of the following: dry shampoo, dry conditioner, salt spray, and texturizing spray. “These are great for absorbing oil on the scalp on second-day dirty hair," he says. "They are also great for texture throughout the midshaft and ends.” Salt and texture sprays can also be used on wet hair and “are great to build both volume and resistance to dropping.” He also recommends adding to the roots before a blowout to extend its lifespan. Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Invisible Spray ($25, sephora.com) not only absorbs excess oil, but also builds volume and adds natural-looking texture. Josie Maran Bohemian Waves Argan Hair Mist Texture Volume & Moisture ($22, sephora.com) adds texture while preventing dryness.

Best Sunscreens For Your Face, According To Dermatologists.

Wearing sunscreen on your face is an absolute must. In fact, you should be wearing it at all times. That means during every season of the year (yes, winter too!) and even if you're just sitting inside all day. Wondering why? Well, according to experts, skipping on sunscreen is pretty dang dangerous for your skin.

When it comes to appearance, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause issues like discoloration, fine lines, and wrinkles. But more importantly, being over-exposed to UV light puts you at a huge risk for developing skin cancer says New York-based dermatologist Marnie Nussbaum, MD. "UV rays even go through windows," she explains. "Which is why it's critical to wear sunscreen daily on your face, even if you're just staying home."
And while slathering on SPF seems pretty doable (how hard can it be to incorporate one more skincare product into your beauty routine?), the problem is that many formulas can be thick, goopy, and leave behind obnoxious white streaks (especially if you've got a darker skin tone). That said, we tapped dermatologists to get their picks of the best sunscreens for your face no matter your skin type. Because TBH, sun protection should be a no-brainer, not an eternal struggle.

Protect + Hydrate Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50

Aveenobedbathandbeyond.com$8.99)
"This sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection in a light formula that contains soothing oat extract," says Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. "Oat extract forms a protective seal over the skin to help maintain a healthy skin barrier." Noted!

Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 100

Neutrogenaulta.com : $14.99
Looking for extra, extra protection? "This sunscreen has been clinically shown to provide better sunburn protection as compared to products with a lower SPF," Dr. Zeichner explains. "It dries fully on the skin without leaving your face feeling greasy."

Mineral SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen

Sun Bumulta.com : $17.99
"This sunscreen uses mineral-only protection in a hydrating base enriched with moisturizing botanicals," says Dr. Zeichner. A bonus? It can be used on all skin types, even those with sensitive skin. "It also fully rubs in without leaving behind a white cast on the skin." Win!

Zincscreen 100% Mineral Lotion SPF 40

Supergoop!dermstore.com : $42.00
"This is an excellent choice as it is 100 percent mineral based, lightweight and pink-toned which comes out translucent on most skin tones," explains Dr. Nussbaum.  It's also got ingredients like coconut and blueberry extract, which she says nourish the skin while also forming a protective barrier at the same time.

Pure & Free Baby Mineral Sunscreen

Neutrogenabedbathandbeyond.com : $10.99

Sea Clearly Gel Sunscreen SPF 50

Sonreisonreiskin.com : $45.00
ICYMI, sunscreens that leave a greasy, white substance on the skin are a total bummer. That's why this translucent gel is perf for all skin tones. "With so many different sunscreens on the market, there is a formula and texture to suit every preference and need," Dr. Zeichner says. It's also got ingredients like Vitamin C, E, and Ferulic Acid to lock in the skin's natural moisture.

Eryfotona Actinica Zinc

Isdinisdin.com : $55.00
"This is 100% zinc-based, but super light so there is no residue unlike other zinc formulas," says Dr. Morgan Rabach, board certified dermatologist and co-founder of LM Medical in NYC. "It also has antioxidants, peptides so it protects from future damage while also repairing your skin at the same time.

NeoStrata Skin Active Matrix Support SPF 30, 1.75 Ounce

NeoStrataskinstore.com : $74.00

UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46

EltaMDskinstore.com : $36.00

SkinCeuticalsskinceuticals.com : $34.00
“Physical sunscreens are best for people with acneic skin,” says Dr. Engelman. “Look for oil-free, gel textures that won’t clog pores, and the ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide." She says this one helps absorb oil without making skin look chalky.

Best Tinted Moisturizers For Evening Out Your Skin Tone.

Now is the perfect time to take a break from a full face of makeup. While staying at home and socializing from a distance (aka virtually), you have total license to give your skin a break with a minimalist approach to beauty products. While we're here for playing with makeup for fun (it can be a much-needed creative outlet), if you're looking to embrace a more low maintenance approach to your everyday glow, a tinted moisturizer is your ideal solution.
The moisturizer-first, coverage-second approach can really do wonders for taking your skin from red, dull, or uneven to looking like you tried (without having to actually do much). It's a multi-tasking wonder worker that blurs blemishes and makes skin have a really natural-looking radiance. But, there’s more to look for in a tinted moisturizer than just flawless coverage. Sejal Shah, M.D., a dermatologist practicing in New York City, says you should also look for antioxidants to counter any environmental damage, SPF to protect against the sun, hyaluronic acid to plump up skin, glycerin to moisturize, and niacinamide to reduce pore size.
Need a little help shopping? Ahead, find the best tinted moisturizers according to makeup artists and editors.

Best Face Masks For Acne

If you struggle with acne, your nightly routine might include a spot treatment or anti-acne serum. While these are great for targeting pesky individual pimples, face masks for acne can treat your whole face at once and help prevent future breakouts at the same time.
“Acne medications can be irritating, and masks provide that sweet spot wherein the active ingredients can stay on the skin for a bit longer without as much risk for causing a flare up,” says Mona Gohara, MD, a dermatologist and professor at Yale University. “It also takes the guess work out of how much to apply, as the mask comes pre-infused with essential ingredients, so you just have to put it on.”
As much as Dr. Gohara praises masking, she does warn against DIY face masks and sheet masks aimed at hydrating the skin if you suffer from acne. “DIY ingredients can prove to be really irritating, toothpaste being the biggest offender," she says. "Hydrating masks can also clog pores and leave the skin in a pro-comedogenic state."

Instead, she recommends looking for masks with beta hydroxy acids like salicylic acid that will help remove excess oil by exfoliating dead skin cells and unclogging pores. Alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic and lactic acid, are also great at clearing pores. Plus, they can be slightly less irritating than salicylic acid. Benzoyl peroxide and colloidal sulfur have antibacterial properties that can also minimize acne.
“All of these ingredients are effective at reducing all types of acne, whether it be hormonal, comedonal or inflammatory,” says Marnie Nussbaum, MD, a board certified dermatologist in NYC.

Best Mud Mask

Ahava Mineral Mud Clearing Facial Treatment

Ahava
lookfantastic.com : $21.00
Give your breakouts the boot with this mineral mud mask. Your skin is sure to feel clean without any dryness, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Most importantly, this mud mask targets excess oil to prevent future breakouts while taming present ones.

Best For Oil Control

Clinique Acne Solutions Oil-Control Cleansing Mask

Clinique
ulta.com : $25.00
Clay is a popular anti-acne ingredient because it absorbs excess oil while also healing blemishes and preventing future breakouts. Dr. Gohara advises using this mask, as it has salicylic acid that cuts through oil that can contribute to clogged pores. At the same time, clay sucks up extra sebum.

Best Charcoal Mask

Origins Clear Improvement Charcoal Honey Mask to Purify and Nourish

ulta.com :
$34.00

Charcoal is an OG when it comes to acne-fighting solutions. It soaks up excess oil and draws out impurities and buildup from your pores. With added ingredients like fermented honey and golden wildflower, which also help to moisturize, your skin will be clear, nourished, and zit-free.

Best For Redness

SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Masque

SKINCEUTICALS
skinceuticals.com : $59.00

With acne comes redness, which can make spots look more apparent and irritated. This mask has active botanicals and hyaluronic acid that will treat redness, which Dr. Nussbaum says is great for sensitive skin.

Best Peel

Laneige Clear-C Peeling Mask

laneige.com : $70.00
This mask targets dead skin cells so you can say bye to your uneven skin texture. Dr. Gohara recommends this mask because it has alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), which help to loosen up blocked pores and trapped dirt and oil and exfoliate the skin, while also preventing acne scarring. Strawberry seeds add physical exfoliation—and feel extra satisfying when you wash it away.
